Did you know that, in SC, an order of protection (which is required for married couples because the state won’t allow you to put a restraining order against your spouse) does not state the distance in which your abuser must stay away from you? They can live right next door or across the street from you if they want too!! In addition, there are law enforcement offices that will not uphold an order of protection. Instead, they will write up a report and tell you that it is a family court issue and YOU must take your abusive partner back to family court in order for any justice to be served? So, in a nutshell, an order of protection is disregarded as nothing but a piece of paper and allows an abusive partner to get as close to you as they want. Yes, once you finally get that person back into court they will typically be put into jail for a period of approximately 60 days, but that can take months depending upon your lawyer and the availability of a time slot with a judge. Is it any wonder why there are so many women/men killed in this state by their abusive partners???
